長くなりがちな日本人の英文をシンプルにする方法

ビジネスでは、主旨が一目で伝わるシンプルな英文が良いとされます。文法的に正しくても長くて回りくどい文章は、ネイティブには好まれません。

以下の英文をシンプルにするにはどうすればいいでしょうか。

1. We made a recommendation during the meeting that was held last week that we should hire a person who is an expert in the field of IT.
   先週開催されたミーティングで、ITの専門家を採用すべきだと薦めた。
   
2. It is our conclusion that sales will revert back to the levels that we recorded in 2019, which is very good news.
   売上は2019年に記録した水準に戻り、それは良いことだというのが私達の結論だ。
   
3. There is a requirement that each and every new employee who has recently been hired by the company completes training for a period of five days.
   最近当社に採用された新入社員は誰もが皆、5日間のトレーニングを受けるという要件がある。

簡潔明快な英文を書くポイントをいくつかご紹介します。

1. 「動詞＋名詞」ではなく、「動詞一語」を使う

以下のように、動詞一語で同じ意味を表すことができます。   

• We made a recommendation/proposal that 　⇒　We recommended/proposed that…
• We offered a suggestion that ⇒ We suggested that…

2. 「It is構文」と「there is構文」を避ける

「It is構文」と「there is構文」は、英文が長くなりがちなので出来る限り避けます。

• It is our conclusion that　⇒ We conclude that
• There is a requirement that ⇒ We are required to

3. 関係詞節を避ける

thatやwhichを使った関係詞節は長くなりがちなので、より短い表現で同じ意味を表すことができないか考えます。

• the meeting that was held last week　⇒ last week’s meeting
• a person who is an expert in the field of IT　⇒ an IT expert
• which is very good news ⇒ fortunately

4. 冗語（redundant words）を避ける

同じ意味の繰り返しなど、カットできる表現を探します。

• each and every new employee ⇒ all new employees
• revert back to ⇒ revert to
• training for a period of five days ⇒ five days of training

ポイントを踏まえて以下のように書き換えることができます。

1. We recommended during last week’s meeting that we hire an IT expert.
2. Fortunately, we conclude that sales will revert to 2019 levels.
3. All new employees are required to complete five days of training.
